There are a number of steps you can take to ensure the air your baby is breathing is the cleanest possible. Use organic items wherever possible in the nursery, specifically when it comes to where baby sleeps. Linens, pillows, blankets , and baby mattresses can be found in organic fabrics and materials. If you wish to paint the nursery walls, do so with vibrant low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints. Look for furniture made from certified sustainable wood or reclaimed materials. The baby is due this summer. The couple already has a daughter – Harlow, who is 19 months old.

Teresa is a full-time mom to Caleb, 4, Noah, 2, and was expecting her first daughter, Zoe Elizabeth. Her husband Scott is an officer in the Marine Corps, was deployed to Iraq in March and won’t return home until October after the birth of his first daughter. Teresa was looking to jazz up the nursery her two boys once shared into a feminine haven.

For her unborn daughter Teresa decided on traditional furnishings. Tracy chose decor pieces with graceful shapes and a shabby-chic feel and dolled up the room with cute details. A pastel-pink crib and cozy glider were selected as furniture pieces, and a dragonfly appliqué added to a simple white Roman shade added some color pops. Adding subtle touches like replacing the old brass doorknob with the rosy glass one made a huge difference to the room.

Tracy imagined a vintage garden when designing baby Zoe’s room. The tree silhoutte on the wall brought in a variety of colors and lended a whimsical feel to it. Tracy fashioned it out of patterned wallpapers from the ’60s and 70′s. Instead of buying a perfect set of coordinated crib linens, Tracy plays with patterns and textures that don’t have to have exactly mataching colors, but a similar tone.

She also suggests playing around with items that already exist in your home and to get creative with the ideas you have to achieve the look you want. Because she couldn’t find a birdcage light fixture she wanted at an affordable price, she bought a cage at a yard sale, added some spray paint and electrical wire and boom, a beautiful chandelier. Teresa had a round mirror she didn’t know where to put, so it hung in her hallway. Tracy found a way to make it into a nursery accessory by fashioning bejeweled ribbon with safety pins and screwed it into the baby’s room wall with a posy-shaped pink knob as the anchor.

When designing a nursery for a baby girl, it’s normal to have your first instinct be to paint the room pink. But instead of using one shade of pink, Tracy contrasted borders on the ceiling, baseboards, and door frame in hot pink. The look gives the illusion of expensive crown moolding work and adds depth to the room.

While most redesigned are witnessed for the first time in front of a street full of neighbors and friends shouting ‘Move that bus,’ Teresa saw her nursery makeover alone. After seeing it for the first time, she started to cry. “This is better than anything I ever dreamed of,” she said.

Her son Winston Spencer Bertrand was born on February 20 to her and her husband Chris. Given their hectic schedules of filming shows for HGTV as well as running Bertrand Designs, they were happy to finish their modern nursery before their son’s arrival. “It’s a room that’s all about creativity,” Bertrand says. “We wanted to make it personal and happy, but we didn’t want it to scream nursery. We wanted it to reflect our modern tastes.”

The nursery is what you would from the winner of a national design competition, imaginative, creative, in a word, special. The room contains a soothing palette of cream-colored walls with olive-green stripes. Bright splashes of grass green and red artwork pop in the room. The modern crib and changing table were gifts from family members. The couple designed the room on a tight budget with furnishings including a DwellStudio zebra area rug and drapery hardware from Wal-Mart, proving that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a big impact. “This economy is tough, and even though Jennifer won a reality show, our business hasn’t been immune,” Chris says. “People are doing smaller projects like painting rooms.”

The first detail you notice in the nursery is the giant Union Jack front and center. The British flag is an ode to England, where Chris was born and raised before moving to the Midwest. But in this room, grass green substitutes for the flag’s traditional blue. Bertrand, a former art teacher in the Blue Valley School District, painted the flag and stripes. Using the same green paint, she painted wooden frames containing childhood photos of her and Chris.

Jennifer is passionate about using original art in Winston’s room. Besides her own paintwork, art pieces are by friends who are local Kansas City-area artists. A plush deer wall hanging, an owl pillow and a bullfrog are by Alisa Ross. Ross’ husband, Scribe, painted a graffiti-style rhino that hangs in the closet. Jodie Stallard hand-painted a red child’s chair. Peterjun Custodio, who is deaf and mute, sewed the custom slipcover for the glider and a crib blanket.

Bertrand also has art hanging in the nursery from artist Jenean Morrison of Tennessee, whom she’d never met, who sent her a congratulatory e-mail after Bertrand won the show. They chatted about art, Bertrand checked out Morrison’s Web site and liked what she saw. Morrison sent her a painting with colorful dots as a gift, which served as the inspiration for the nursery. “The painting is very special because it represents such a huge moment in our lives of winning the show,” Bertrand says. “We wanted to share that with Winston.”

With her perky personality, Bertrand would like to be “the Rachael Ray of design,” making decorating approachable for the masses. Bertrand wants to start taping her show in the Fall. Since winning, Bertrand has appeared on two one-hour HGTV specials, “Paint-Over With Jennifer Bertrand,” in which she demonstrated how painting techniques can transform rooms, kitchen cabinets and furniture, and “HGTV Showdown,” which pitted her against Myles in a four-hour design of a children’s playroom. “At least Winston will get to see himself on TV,” says Bertrand, laughing. She was visibly pregnant during the episode.

1. Gender-Neutral Decor
Pink is not going away anytime soon and neither is blue, but they are being joined by the neutral, unisex colors. Sarah Lynam of Pottery Barn Kids said the store’s summer line is loaded with gender-neutral schemes, including a new Dr. Seuss line featuring blue, red and yellow. Items in the nursery bedding line will be available this month, and prices range from $29 for a fitted sheet to $99 for a crib bumper. And for those with a green mind to match the green decor, the sheets are made with organic cotton fibers.

2. Designer-Look Nurseries
With a celebrity gracing the cover of a magazine with their new baby almost each week, the several page spread about their joyous addition not only displays the hottest diaper bags and strollers, but nursery decor. “You are going to spend a lot of time in the room, so you want it to be inviting for you and able to grow,” Lynam said. “You are starting to see the designer look, so you grow with the child and you like it, and later it can transition into another room.” Whatever the style of your home is, bring that style into your nursery.

3. Animals Move Indoors
All of nature’s creatures have moved inside to baby’s nursery. Owls and elephants seem to be popping up everywhere in nursery themes. Horton Hears A Who! has been a major influence in this revival of the big mammal.

4. Lavender and Tiffany Blue
Pink with brown and blue with brown have been the color combinations for a while in nurseries for a reason. They look pretty together. But other color schemes are on the horizon. Lavender and purple seem to be trending up as well as a lot of aqua blue and Tiffany blue.

How have you decorated your nursery?

The sweet baby bedroom is outfitted with organic bedding, a green crib and non-toxic paints, and will provide ample space for Luna to grow. Luna’s nature-inspired nursery was outfitted mainly by the Green Cradle. “It was important for me to create a green nursery,” says Constance. “Usually, the nursery is the most toxic room in the house because everything is new! But here, the furniture is made out of sustainable wood without toxic varnishes and finishes.” Even the paint used on the walls and to create her tree of life is nontoxic, as well.

From her first day, little Luna is already doing her part to create a healthier environment! Her actress mom is already dressing her in mainly organic clothing and has cloth diapers keeping her dry. Constance even got her friends in on the eco-friendly action. “At my baby shower, I asked my friends for organic, green products,” she said. Luna’s bed is a solid wood crib, made in the United States from sustainable U.S. forests. When she is big enough, it will convert to a simple toddler bed. All of Luna’s crib bedding is also organic, right down to the mattress.
